Goals:
- To facilitate the treatment of children with special needs at the University of Pittsburgh’s affiliated community based dental centers
- To enhance preceptor leadership skills in the enabling of a new generation of dental professionals to proactively treat children who have special needs.
Objectives:
- To Introduce the Maternal and Child Health Bureau’s ( MChB) Life Course concepts in special needs dentistry
- To apply these concepts to clinical dentistry among faculty at the School of Dental Medicine and at the affiliated community based dental centers
- To coordinate better our understanding and commitment of addressing special needs access in our clinics
Impressive advances in science and technology over the last 25 years have led to increasing numbers of individuals who survive with developmental disabilities and other chronic special health care needs. Service systems to support these individuals and their families have become progressively more complex as a result of the increased numbers of clients and the changes in health, education and social policy.
In conjunction with this, the MChB has introduced the concept of Life Course strategies to be used in forming health-related programs for all individuals. These programs focus on wellness issues for individuals with disabilities and other chronic special needs. Life Course strategies for optimizing oral health care of special needs populations include:
- Enabling of optimal growth and developmental conditions at an early age by providing early screenings, preventive services and education.
- Maintaining these conditions by the application of preventive and educational services (an interplay between biologic, environmental and social factors).
- Providing skills to students related to the delivery of quality clinical care
- Promoting interdisciplinary treatment, resources, and services related to children with special needs and their families and their extended community.
