Busy Clinician”

- Target audience: Physicians and healthcare professionals (Nurse Practitioner, Physician Assistant, Registered Nurse, Mental Health Professional, Social Worker)
- Overview and Intent:
Patients struggling with or recovering from substance abuse disorders are commonly seen in primary care settings. This educational program outlines approaches for primary care providers in recognizing and managing patients struggling with addictions. The presentation will include information that can help recovering patients decrease their susceptibility to relapse, recognize and manage high-risk situations, and use available self-help, pharmacological, and specialty resources. Primary care providers have an important role in long-term management of patients in recovery related to drug and alcohol addiction.
- Learning Objectives:
1) Implement screening, assessment, and brief interventions related to drug and alcohol use and misuse
2) Describe the epidemiology and neurobiology of addiction medicine
3) Examine addiction medicine as specialty medicine related to the assessment and treatment of drug and alcohol abuse
4) Define psychiatric and medical comorbidities associated with and related to drug and alcohol addiction
5) Differentiate opioid, sedative-hypnotic, alcohol, stimulant, and cannabis addiction and treatment options
John Six, MD is Medical Director for Greenbriar Treatment Center. This organization has a full continuum of care to assist the chemically dependent individual on the road to recovery through individualized treatment. Dr. Six is a family physician at Claysville Family Practice.
